When in Rome...

...郷に従え。

And now a taste of my Japanese blog, and most band dude blogs, and you can see that we are boring and not-at-all hardcore.

I saw bottled iced chai. Chai is delicious and I don't do Staba so I bought it.

It's stuff like this until rehearsals or lives. (°□°;)

Some news; on 8/27 at Cyber, we're gonna be playing with Cult Fiction Club, Canzel, SuG, Toon Factory, and DragonWAPPPPPPER.

Live Report 6/17/09, Ikebukuro Cyber: Chemical Pictures, etc.

Cyber is tiny and cramped and dirty and a real pain in the butt to deal with at a physical level.

Photobucket

On the other hand, the staff is great, and there is no dividing bar at the front, so the fans are crammed right to the front of the stage. It is a great feeling. You think that since all these places are relatively small you'd feel some sort of intimacy as it is, which is more true of some places than others. Holiday and Area feel a little far, Narciss feels good when it's packed, but Cyber is just soooo tiny and dingy and such a dive but they're crammed up to the front with you and you can look them in the eyes and watch their hearts flutter, and I sort of laugh inside because I think there are so many more interesting things than me to go crazy about.

Photobucket

It was an early morning that started with us filming something BUT I'M NOT TELLING YOU WHAT, NOT YET, JEEZ, then heading in to rehearsal. The place is crazy tiny, and the dressing room is like, a closet, so we really didn't have a chance to chat with any other bands. Tenten knows some of the guys in Hana Shounen Baddies (formerly Billy), but that was about it honestly.

Photobucket

I remember the lights being extra hot. Oh also it's Schwarz's birthday today (6/19)! He got tons and tons of letters, and some from overseas. One from America had 150 yen taped to the inside of the letter, which is just enough to buy a bottle of our favorite milk tea. :D He really liked the presentation of that one.

Photobucket

All in all it's been incredibly busy as a band lately, maybe not so much in terms of live activity (although that certainly contributes), but lots of behind-the-scenes preparations. It's exhausting and I'm a bit more moody than usual, and that's sort of sad to realize. And I know I don't have much to show for it yet, not to you guys, much as I'd like to... but come summer time I should have interesting things to talk about, I hope.

Photobucket

One thing that's been fun is all these little inside jokes that are coming to fruition as we play a lot and meet people. Steve Appleton and I also chatted about how great it is to be a musician, because without even speaking to each other, having played the same songs together even just over a day, you already have your own little language of musical communication within that group, whether they are musical gags/jokes or just the sheer joy of playing together. If you've gathered a good group together, that is. And I do feel that with these guys.

Photobucket

Masami will be with us up until the one-man on Tenten's birthday, and then... I dunno. But dang I love this guy.

Photobucket

And I got my first two letters ever from Japanese fans! One was sent to our fanmail address and one was brought to Cyber itself. Whee~

Whereas last year I felt like I depended mostly upon all the wonderful, amazing, and diverse people who read this English blog, I've been glad to be a part of something that has a decent following among the Japanese fans as well, because through the Japanese blog I've been able to meet similarly wonderful, amazing, and diverse people.

also is it just me or are most of the people who read my blogs way super hawt

Next is Sendai! I will have no opportunity to eat any of its famous beef tongue, and for that I am very sad. ;_;

Steve's Japan band

I'm going to assume I'm not allowed to post the shots with Steve, but you can see his picture whenever you want, because he is a good-looking bastard and I do not want you to look at me and then look at him and then never look at me again because seriously look at that guy what a jerk; talented and young and studly and a super-nice guy; wanna punch him this is HIGHLANDER right here*

Ahem. L to R, Ryo (drums), Jimi (that is ME; bass), JJ (keys), Tomas (guitar).

*i do not really want to punch anybody he is a fine upstanding fellow and we can make a crowd DANCE i tell you what

We had trouble from the get-go, all morning, into rehearsal, it was horrible and crazy and I was a very depressed, sad little guy, wandering around the building with the guys, apologizing to anyone and everyone who would lend an ear...

BUT I GUESS EVEN JUST OUR REHEARSAL WAS MIND-BLOWING because everything was smoothed out and everyone was like "psh jimi why you gotta worry". And most people just said, "well, if you feel the need to apologize, you can make it up to everyone by rocking the crap out of the crowd tonight."

...which was a beautiful sentiment, and just what I needed to hear. :)

Photobucket

J-mom Michika showed up, as did Ryo, Satsuki, and Shun from Rentrer en Soi... initially just to see their roadie's band play, but once they knew that I was playing, they stayed until the end of our set. That was way, way cool of them and they didn't even have to stay.

Photobucket

The other cool thing about this show was getting to hang out with the Yumeji/Kenji/Shunsuke/Maru/Tsukasa session guys!

Photobucket

Here's me and Maru. We became friends instantly. He had me take a bunch of polaroids for their merch table with him and Yumeji. Shunsuke has been setting up really cool events for us, and is a reassuringly laid-back guy. Kenji, formerly of Wyse and now in Virgil, has also become a fast friend.

Photobucket

And Yumeji, from Mello and Rhyolite. An utterly fantastic guy; everything he says to me, every piece of advice he gives to me, is just so... sagacious. Was definitely almost moved to tears at a coupla points, and that was just in normal conversation. The older brother I never had, without a doubt.

How nice to know I have people over here who insist I am their son/brother/cousin! :D

Their session opened with Pink Spider, a Rize song, Lips by Kat-tun, and some bis songs.

Also I got my first present from a fan! Or rather I should say a present from someone I didn't already know! Not that I don't appreciate those too! Just, felt like a little milestone, yanno? :-P

SETLIST
-Yodare Chaos into SE from homepage
1. Human Rubbish (a brighter song than the title would suggest! Visual pop rocks)
2. Präparat (quickly becoming the big CP song)
3. Walking Ashland (high-tempo countrified blues)
4. Suffering (punch-you-in-the-face metal)
5. I wanna get away (pop-punk chorus and a heavy crushing bridge)

Next one is at Cyber on Wednesday!

Steve Appleton Showcase

I'm cheating on CP today.

Tomas, JJ, Meev's drummer and I are supporting Steve Appleton at his showcase live tonight. We had a long, productive, fun rehearsal yesterday. Tomas is an amazing, amazing jazz guitarist, JJ is a brilliant rock keyboardist, Meev's drummer is disgustingly tight, and I'm just some punk kid from a little VK band. Also, Steve is a genius jazz pianist and no slouch on guitar either.

Should be fun!

Magazine #2

I totally forgot to mention, but there's a long 2-page interview with Chemical Pictures in this month's issue of Alive...

Photobucket

("Alive" is part of Visualive who have been helping us out tons lately; good peeps. Also we have the cover of the next issue, shhhh :-*)

Live Reports-ish: Gossip, ...

Photobucket

Gossip had a one-day reunion show, and Chemical Pictures' current drummer, Masami, was their drummer, so after various separate errands, Schwarz, Joe, and myself met up at Shinjuku Holiday and made our way backstage. We had bought some drinks for the Gossip guys but we got there just as they were about to head onstage. We ran into Ryo and Shun from Rentrer en Soi, who remembered me and gave me warm greetings, and finally put two and two together that the gaijin in Chemical Pictures is me. (Both "gaijin in VK" and "that new Chemical Pictures band" are getting around pretty fast.) Joe's renewed presence in VK is also a blast from the past for a lot of fellow band dudes, and he seems to have a lot of old friends with a lot of catching up to do; Ryu from Administrator was one of them. Nice guy. Almost forgot; had a reunion with Yumeji too! (ex-Mello, ex-Rhyolite)

Gossip was fun. Hiro's pretty funny. Kaname and Schwarz briefly played together in the recent past so it was cool to meet him too. Masami was having a lot of fun; in the MC when he mentioned that he was drumming for CP, the 3 of us in the back almost, almost cheered but that woulda been annoying. :-P

Photobucket

Schwarz, clearly a non-believer in the concept of private property, decided to try on Masami's jacket. I still don't think he's noticed that my face is in the picture.

Photobucket

Afterward, Masaki called me up and wanted to chill some more, and he also knew Joe, so we went and said hello, and Schwarz and Joe headed back to their respective homes while Masaki and I had a very, very chill drinkin' time.

And that was that!

Banzai Butterfly

Just darling and dreamy!

I loved "Doko" and its video, and while I'm not often sold on Kaela's concepts, she does manage to look like she's having a lot of fun and cute to boot in "Banzai", which is a nice, fun song.

And then she surprised a friend at the friend's wedding party by coming out and performing this song impromptu for them. I like the melodies involved, and while I think the song could benefit from a sparser instrumentation, I think it works all around. :)

Askew 2: Elec-tric Boogaloo

If you go to Askew and download the 2nd issue, which you should because I am in it but also people way more interesting than me as well, then you might make a few people really happy, me for sure, but also the people who worked hard to put it together, to build it up from the dirt out of nothing like a primeval creator god;

just do it okay, sheesh

There are pretty pictures. There are pretty colors. There are pretty boys and girls. Also I'm sure, like, some of the fonts are pretty too, you weird font people.

(by "I am in it" I mean "I am in it because Chemical Pictures is in it", and Chemical Pictures is a band I am in)

And even if you buy a subscription this is way cheaper than trying to import a Japanese magazine and also easier because it is in the Queen's English. Heck, I have qualifications and I'd still rather read an English magazine!

QUIZ TIME
Q: what are you going to do right now?
A: i dunno, call a friend, see if they wanna go see-- WRONG! The answer is, download Askew #2.

Big day.

Spent the morning with Mr.& Mrs. Cryptomayhem before their flight back to the motherland. Mrs. C gave me a knitted eyeball which is way cool and way awesome and also way killah.

They make this trip once a year, they told me. But then they showed me some tickets: they'd bought tickets to the CP one-man in July.

Just... wow. How nice of them. Just ridiculously sweet.

i guess they like cp a lot

As we were saying goodbye, I ran into JJ, who you'll remember as the fake drummer for the band I fake guitar in with Tommy H/F 6. We have something in the worksssssssssss

And then I went to Holiday to see Masaki, Keita, Kino, and Yura do a session band, Kanabun!

First, I wanna just say that the rest of the bands were horrible. Dreadful, horrible dreck. I have lost all patience for any VK that isn't discernably good on some level. I was getting pissed off listening to these awful bands. And I thought, wow, I spent a year playing shows with bands just like this. So that had me bummed out for a little bit. Terrible D covers, terrible Deg covers, terrible oshare-isms, guitarists who should not even be standing on stage yet, etc.

But back to Kanabun! Masaki, Keita, and Yura were cosplaying as characters from some mangas I was unfamiliar with but the costumes looked really cool, actually.

Kino was this guy:

And the costume was surprisingly high quality. Kino has had some insanely bizarre costumes over the years and I wish I could find them on le internets somewhere.

Masaki is the most positive person I know. He is also easily the most attractive male friend I have. And watching him come out on stage... I was watching from the guest area, and I know we guest bandmen aren't supposed to show emotion at all, but when he came out, I couldn't help but grin. Masaki may not be the best singer (although he has improved greatly since Sulfuric Acid), but he is the most fun performer I can think of. The first word that comes to me isn't even "cool"; just "fun". He is a magnet, a star with intense gravity that pulls you in. He is having fun, and he wants you to have fun too.

He's helped me with a lot of stuff. And if it weren't for him, I wouldn't be in CP, if you think about it.

They did two Sulfuric songs, and then beaU's "Chi Matsuri", which is ball-crushingly heavy and too fun. "nandemo kandemo poisute!"

And it was fun to see Keita play guitar, finally! I like his style. Also he has a black SG and I want it.

More coming up; in the meantime, the Cryptomayhems are the coolest people in the world right now.

i accept challengers :-*

Hibari invited us to play seeeecretly at their event.

Mr.&Mrs. Cryptomayhem were there rockin' out again; WHERE WERE YOU, HUH!?!?

Ryoki from KuRt is in Otogadeddo and they had a happy little reunion.

GREAT crowd tonight, especially since no one was supposed to know we were playing!

We did Preparato, Suffering, and Yamu Sora. Suffering is a very demanding song, both musically and physically, and at the end I definitely almost passed out.(°□°;) I should start jogging or something.

But seriously, this was sweet and inspiring.

Live Report 5/16/09, Shinjuku Holiday: Chemical Pictures, PRIMEADDICT, Siva, etc.

Finally, an update of substance!

Our morning started out very punctually; we got to the studio on time, loaded our equipment in our van and made it to Holiday on time. But just before it was our turn to go up for rehearsal, Schwarz realized that we didn't have his pedal board. Calls to the studio were initially unhelpful, which was a further snag, but Shunsuke (bis) let us change out rehearsal time, and we were able to secure the missing equipment. So that took a bit of the wind out of our sails at first.

Photobucket

After our rehearsal, we headed into makeup...

Photobucket

Ta-da! New costumes all around!!

To be honest, I really liked the previous look we were doing so I was initially hesitant to change something I was actually comfortable with, but I'm really pleased with how they've come together.

Photobucket

We two, you can barely tell we're supposed to be in the same band!

As for the live itself... I had some sound problems, by which I mean the sound in the house was fine, but I could barely hear myself on stage. And that leads you to subconsciously play harder than you usually would, which contributes to more mess-ups. Also, somehow we missed a particularly important cue that, admittedly, only we ourselves would know we missed it. And the new costumes are really hot. After we got off stage, we were all rather frustrated with ourselves.

But our lady from Visualive took video and pictures for us, and as we watched it, we realized that it wasn't nearly as bad as it felt up there, and the fans went pretty wild for our new country-blues song that I didn't think would elicit such a crazy response!

Also I don't know that I'll ever get used to a club full of girls screaming "Jimi!!" That still feels weird. :-P

Now, I didn't get any personalized presents, although the rest of the members did. Even so, there was still a lot to go around. Strangely, we received almost nothing but donuts.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Mister Donuts funky faux-hambuger donuts, and a dozen Krispy Kremes.

Photobucket

This was dinner and it was DELICIOUS

Photobucket

We had to wait a million hours to go on, so we played cards and shogi a whole bunch. A very good idea in hindsight.

Siva's bassist is amazing as you all may know, and he and I bonded over talk of Jaco Pastorius and that made us pretty giddy.

Huge thanks to Shunsuke for putting the event together, to mom (the Japanese one) for having nothing but nice things to say, to mom (the real one) for her surprisingly good memory when it comes to our live schedule, Yuri (Rubik), Yuana (Boogieman/ex-Kagerou), Holiday (for putting us on the cover of this month's Holiday Magazine), Visualive (for interviewing us for the newest issue of Alive magazine), all y'all who've said such nice stuff... Surrounded by too many awesome people to count.

Next Saturday, Area; BE THERE or not thats cool too ill understand

There's a white dude on the train here with an Amazon Kindle. Now, keep in mind that I am tragically unhip when it comes to technology: no portable mp3 player, no gaming console newer than an NES. But the Kindle looks like a prop on a cheesy sci-fi show or a futuristic kids toy. History may likely prove me stupid, though!

Just ran into The Cryptomayhem Family at 'baba, after I'd just spent Mother's Day with my Japanese Mom Michika! Totally random, also totally SICKTIGHT (゜∇゜)

J-Mom and I went to go see Boogieman, Moran, and Sugar. Met Moran for the first time, we're looking forward to touring together. Good to see Sugar again, too. They are, hands down, the most interesting performers in the scene right now. Incredible. What atmosphere!

Gonna chill more with Krypto & The Gang later this month too.

Now my laptop's adapter is dead! Fairly out of commission until I get that fixed. The day I actually got some new recording software too. >_<

Mostly I'm just here to announce our live on June 30th at Sendai MACANA--yep, goin' all the way up to Miyagi.

I'm not even remotely sure as to the correct romanization of the following band names, but that show will be with Karivari, Kyanzel, Tokyo Mikaeru, and Skull.

Also... ONE-MAN LIVE on July 20th! At Shimokitazawa MOSAIC again.

Got lots of surprises coming up but I hate this 2-month gap!!

Cohesion

HUGE thanks to Laura (editor of Askew Magazine and who also writes her own blog and you should definitely check out both and I don't care if they've only released one issue so far because they have been by far the easiest promotion/publication people I have ever done business with in any capacity no kidding seriously the staff gives me presents) for tweaking the design of this thing!

Hopefully this will make for a little more cohesion with my 'personality' and art direction/vision within Chemical Pictures. New Japanese Mom Michika from Vanilla Edge is working on my Japanese blog in a similar vein, and I'm really pleased that both she and Laura have a pretty darn good idea of what I'm trying to go for, even as I keep giving contradictory and conflicting ideas.

CP blogs

CP ROLL CALL

My fellow bandmates are fascinating, so to those of you who read Japanese, I thought I'd introduce why we all like following each other's band blogs.

Masamike is Masami's blog. Masami blogs about the creative process, his spring allergies, apologizing for silly jokes, and pictures of himself. He has a lot of followers who know him from Gossip, and since he's only committed to doing support for us, he sort of seems on a similar plane of existence as Tenten, separated from the other three of us. More power to 'em!

Read Words #2 is Tenten's blog. Tenten is a very honest writer, succinct and funky but he will always write exactly what's on his mind. Writes a lot about friends. Tenten is frequently in the top 20 music blogs on Ameba, and occassionally cracks the top 10. Being in a band with him is pretty surreal, to be honest.

Schwarzwald is Schwarz's blog. He decided that he'd be the "big eater" of the band, and sure enough he writes a lot about food. Who doesn't like food? Surely he's not THAT crazy about food! Or so I thought. Then he wrote several poetic odes and laments about his favorite brand of milk tea. Which, incidentally, is delicious. He also answers a lot of fan questions, which sorta makes me wish I got more questions! (EDIT: his recent Pick Play photo series is not to be missed.)

And Everything in its Right Place #2, Joe's blog. Joe is easily the most interesting writer of the bunch. I very frequently, truthfully, laugh out loud at his observations and new perspectives on events at which I was present and concerning which jokes had been made in plenty. His deft quips at Schwarz's expense bowl me over, and Tenten's ribbing at Joe's expense are so Charlie Brown-like you can't help but sympathize. His writing style is so, so unique, and if you check out one blog I highly suggest Joe's.

And mine, Letters from Atlantis, which has been nice writing practice for me, since I'm pretty much obligated to update this thing insanely frequently, and I haven't really written anything important in Japanese since college. How much does it suck that writing, reading, and speaking are completely separate abilities? D:
Mostly though I just write about stuff I'd write about here, so if you don't read Japanese, don't worry; you're not missing out on that much. ^_^;

Last night after work I went to Ueno park for some nighttime cherry blossoms, with Masaki, Keita, Yanagi (Swallowtail), and Kino (ex-beaU). Couldn't stay long, but it's nice to know I still have friends. :) Also Kino is a trip! If you were familiar with him in beaU you will probably be like "duh" but hey.

all i can tell you is that we are gonna play a show in sendai

Jimi on the TV on the Internet

Not a single one of you was fooled by my previous entry, were you? :-*
I'd been thinking about that one for months, too! D:
Still it was fun to write, and also wake up to a million emails on my phone, since whenever a comment comes it gets sent to my keitai. :)

Anyway, quite a few people have linked me to the TV performances, so for those of you who missed them, first the one I was in:

That set was not conducive to good shots of me, although since I was merely window dressing and it wasn't really my performance, I don't really mind. :)

Earlier in the show she'd done a song as February:

My friend is the 2nd from the left most of the time, but when they get the letter cards she's holding the first M. She is ridiculously lovely, speaks fluent English, and although we kept meeting up in the hallway to talk we kept getting called away by makeup or wardrobe or, like, having to go to work. Just darling. Also even cuter in normal clothes and no makeup, which is just unfair. I hope we work together again because she just lights up the place and I feel warm merely being in the same room as her. And this is purely in an aesthetic sense.

I need to be completely honest.

Rock J
apan Elec-tric is a work of fiction.

I am not in a VK band. I can barely play guitar. My Japanese is beyond awful.

The content I've been writing for the last few years have been com
posites of other peoples' experiences, photo manipulation, educated guesses, and lots of hoping and praying no one would call me out on it.

Lots of it was just latching onto obscu
re-enough bands and just making stuff up as I went, but I think the way the story is progressing, it was going to be more and more difficult to keep things uncheckable.

To all the people who actually d
id go to Japan and agreed to pretend to have gone to see Laverite or met up with me, thanks so much for keeping the secret for so long!

If you
feel betrayed, I'm sorry. This was a "what if?" scenario, and also an anthropological experiment.

Thanks
so much for reading up until now.
